Hundreds of dead fish were discovered floating in Lakshmi Talab in the Narayan Bagh area of Jhansi on Sunday morning, sparking panic among residents and raising fears of possible chemical contamination in the historic pond. Morning walkers were the first to notice the dead fish covering large portions of the water surface, drawing crowds to the site within hours.
Local residents said a suspicious sack containing a white powder-like substance was also found lying near the edge of the pond. Eyewitnesses believe an unidentified chemical or synthetic polymer may have been dumped into the water, leading to the sudden death of the fish.
The incident has triggered serious environmental concerns in Jhansi, with locals warning that contamination in the pond could also affect nearby groundwater sources and surrounding ecosystems. Residents fear the impact may extend beyond aquatic life if toxic substances have entered the local water system.
“People are deeply concerned about what may have been mixed into the pond water and how it could affect the environment around us,” a local resident said. [QUOTE]
As more dead fish surfaced through the morning, residents reported a strong foul smell around the pond area. Several people alleged that the dumping may have been intentional and demanded a thorough investigation to identify those responsible.
Environmental experts have repeatedly warned that chemical waste dumped into stagnant water bodies can sharply reduce oxygen levels and release toxic compounds that kill aquatic species. Such contamination can also create long-term ecological and public health risks if not addressed quickly.
Citizens in Jhansi have urged authorities to immediately clean the pond, conduct laboratory testing of the water, and examine the suspicious white substance recovered from the site. Residents are also demanding strict legal action against anyone found responsible for polluting the pond.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the fish deaths. However, growing public concern in Jhansi is putting pressure on officials to launch a swift investigation and prevent further environmental damage in the area.
